6. Example: catalytic oxidation of SO2 in a differential fixed-bed reactor
This application example describes a laboratory study. The fixed-bed reactor is said to be differential if, for the chosen operating conditions, the conversion rate of the limiting reactant is less than 10%. Under these conditions, the bed is assumed to be homogeneous, and a value for the initial apparent (or true) velocity relative to the chosen operating conditions can be obtained.
6.1 Problem statement
A gaseous mixture (air with 2 mol% SO 2 under 760 mm Hg) is passed through the 2 × 10 –2 m high catalytic bed contained in a 0.1 m diameter column at a mass flow rate of 6.35 kg/hr.
