5. Glossary

Hydrodynamic focusing; flow focusing

Technique for reducing the cross-sectional area of a fluid flow by means of pinching induced by the adjacent flow of an immiscible fluid.

Microfluidics; microfluidics

Refers both to the science of fluid flow (liquid or gas) in channels whose characteristic length is of the order of a few dozen to several hundred micrometers, and to the techniques and objects required to manipulate them.

Particle anisotrope; anisotropic particle

A particle with a non-uniform distribution of molecules on its surface or in its volume, or with an aspect ratio greater than 1, i.e. different from a sphere.
