3. Magnetic fluid applications

The original combination of liquid and magnetic properties means that magnetic fluids have many potential applications. Over the past twenty years, work has been carried out on a wide range of simple, single-phase magnetic fluids, in terms of both the nature of the solvent and the type of magnetic material dispersed in it.

One of the main applications for ferrofluids, or magnetic fluids in general, is in magnetically supported seals. A magnetic fluid held in place under the action of a magnetic field ensures both good lubrication and a perfect seal, particularly against gases. These magnetic seals are virtually indestructible, and can take on any geometric shape a permanent magnet can give them. Magnetic fluids are also widely used in electronics to protect computer hard disks, and in loudspeakers to dampen vibrations.
