4. Conclusion

Although synthetic polymers have been used in cosmetics for many years, we are only just beginning to realize their full potential. Long regarded as simple thickening agents or viscous materials, they are now key components that bring many benefits to skincare products. What's more, due to their molecular weight and size, these polymers have low toxicity, and many functionalized polymers are safer than their non-polymeric counterparts. Today, the industry is constantly improving formulations, adopting synthesis protocols based on an understanding of the molecular interactions between polymers and the other components of a skincare product. The use of new polymers such as block or graft copolymers, nanocapsules and dendrimers with multiple functional attributes offers unprecedented opportunities.
