8. Challenges for the years ahead

The risks associated with the production, transport and use of ethylene oxide have already led to the rationalization of production units and technological developments in the design of reactors and alkoxylation processes. Safety and production costs are set to benefit, and this trend is set to continue in the years ahead.

In recent years, the European ethoxylated surfactants market has suffered from modest growth rates and overcapacity, the effects of which have been mitigated by acquisitions, rationalizations and plant closures. In addition, new producers outside Europe have appeared, with partial or total integration in raw materials. It is logical to expect these new players to target the European market in the not-too-distant future.
