5. Silo accidents
As we have already mentioned, bulk solids make up a significant proportion of the products handled in France and around the world. Handling such quantities of product is not a trivial task, and requires the installation of batteries of large storage silos capable of holding several hundred tonnes of product per cell. Ensiling powders and filling them into silos of this size is far more complex than one might imagine.
In particular, there are the risks of fire and explosion, of which the accidents that occurred in Metz (1982) and Blaye (1997) are the best known to the general public. The latter is behind the ministerial decree of July 29, 1998, which is the one currently in force...
