1.1 Reminders about solvents

By definition, a solvent is a fluid capable of dissolving other substances. Below the critical point, it is a liquid used at a temperature between its freezing point and, unless it undergoes prior degradation, its boiling point. Above the critical point, it is a supercritical fluid in a state intermediate between liquid and vapor.

Both the dissolution process and the properties of the resulting solution depend on the nature of the solvent and the dissolved substance. Virtually all the essential physico-chemical properties of liquids determine the characteristics of the solvent and solutions. The most important of these are :
