2. Doped single-crystal material or extrinsic material

By diffusing certain electrically active impurities into a semiconductor material, we can :

  • prefer electron conduction or hole conduction, i.e. use N-type or P-type materials;

  • control the resistivity of the material, typically between 10 –5 and 10 2 Ω · m.

2.1 Example of N material: phosphorus-doped silicon

Let's assume that phosphorus (P) atoms are diffused into the silicon crystal lattice and placed in a substitutional position (i.e. a phosphorus atom takes the place of a silicon atom). Each phosphorus atom is surrounded by 4 silicon atoms, with which it exchanges 4 valence...
