2. Calculating the thermal conductivity of gases

The kinetic theory of gases assumes that all molecules are non-interacting rigid spheres of mass m and diameter σ moving at an average velocity v. The number of molecules per unit volume is n. Under the influence of a temperature gradient, the molecules move, collide and bring a certain amount of energy into play. This energy flow q z between two gas layers is proportional to the energy density :

q z µ c V nT
