1.1 General principle
The purpose of a waveguide is to guide and optimally concentrate light towards a device that can collect it. Luminescent waveguides are transparent media made up of a matrix incorporating a fluorophore, a fluorescent (or phosphorescent) material that absorbs light in one spectral range and re-emits it at a longer wavelength.
To obtain an interesting waveguide, both the matrix and the fluorophore must be carefully selected. The matrix must be a robust material that plays a holding role, as it determines the structure of the waveguide and also protects the fluorophore.
