Currently, the race for speed—which began over a decade ago in the all-digital realm—is dominated by on-board CCD cameras in the "ultra-high-speed" category, capable of capturing over a million frames per second. For more conventional CMOS-sensor cameras, the trend is toward a speed of 30,000 fps, with cameras equipped with “large” pixels (> 20 µm) or even covered with microlenses (Figure 18 ).
