2. Characterizing the energy performance of older buildings

2.1 Specific features of older buildings

Given the evolution and differentiation of construction techniques, a specific approach is needed to address the energy performance of older buildings.

The challenges of thermal refurbishment of existing buildings relate to improving winter thermal performance and summer comfort. To these must be added the social and cultural issues involved in preserving the built heritage, and the economic issues involved in the complex rehabilitation of older buildings.

Note

Rehabilitation must be defined according to the type of building under consideration, emphasizing that old buildings present a complex thermal -behavior.
