6. Physico-chemical characterization of coal fly ash

6.1 Pozzolanic power of ash

The mineralogical and chemical nature of ash gives it a pozzolanic power (see Box 1) which translates into a setting phenomenon that increases the mechanical characteristics of the mixture of ash with cements or binders (the same process is used in road mixes for pavement bases).

Box 1 – A little history

Pozzolanic properties have been known since ancient times. In his writings, Vitruvius reports that when materials of volcanic origin extracted from Pozzuoli at the foot of Mount Vesuvius are mixed with lime, the resulting mixture hardens both under water and in air.
