2. Core drilling

Although mainly used in mining research, rock sampling (core sampling) is also used for geotechnical reconnaissance.

This article focuses on both areas, as the equipment required is identical.

From the 1950s onwards, rock sampling developed mainly as a result of the arrival on the market of increasingly high-performance cutting tools and the development of machines for using them. Mining research was undoubtedly the main driver behind the development of diamond tools.

We'll be looking at the equipment and materials needed to take samples from rocks, their choice according to soil type, and their implementation.
