5. Practice of settlement studies

5.1 General

Mastery of even the most modern and complex test and calculation methods is important for the success of settlement studies in geotechnical engineering projects. However, it needs to be complemented by some "common sense" knowledge of possible and impossible events, orders of magnitude and relationships in settlement and stability calculations. This paragraph is devoted to this knowledge, based on the engineer's experience and reasoning.
