1. Scratch hardness testing

1.1 Mohs scale

Historically, this is the oldest method of measuring hardness: a body is harder than another if it can scratch it. It was used by Réaumur, then by Mohs, who proposed the first mineral hardness scale (table 1 ): each mineral scratches those below it. The minerals indicated have been selected to lead to comparable hardness intervals between two consecutive elements.
