11. Conclusion

The intrinsic properties of metal foams, which belong to the family of cellular materials, are mainly a function of their morphology, constituent materials and relative density. These properties are often studied in relation to the application functions envisaged, and remain highly dependent on the processes used to manufacture them.

Closed structures offer superior sound and energy absorption properties. On the other hand, by definition, they cannot claim access to the fields of thermal or electrical exchange, or even medical implants, where open structures excel. More generally, depending on the properties required, metallic foams are in competition with other cellular materials such as ceramic foams or honeycomb structures.
