9. Catalytic support

This type of application only concerns open-structure foams, more correctly referred to as metal sponges. The foams used in these applications all have good temperature and corrosion resistance. Mechanical resistance is generally minimal, as the desired properties are small cell size and minimal pressure drop.

9.1 The benefits of foams

As with electrical applications, it's the open structure of metal foam and its high specific surface area that make this application so attractive. Thanks to its connected structure and good conductivity, metal foam ensures better thermal diffusion than conventional solutions.
