5.1 General

The oxidation states of tungsten range from – 2 to + 6. The lower states – 2 to + 1 exist only in organometallic compounds, and the higher ones (+ 6 in particular) correspond to acidic properties.

At room temperature, solid tungsten is only attacked by fluorine gas and nitro-hydrofluoric acid. Regal water (HCI + HNO 3 ) and bases (NaOH, KOH) only attack it in the presence of oxidizing...
