3. Conventional mechanical characteristics

3.1 Standards

French standard NF EN 1563 (cf. ) defines the main minimum characteristics of GS cast irons (table 1 ). Each cast iron grade is designated by the symbol GJS followed by two numbers, the first of which indicates the minimum tensile strength and the second the minimum elongation in percent after rupture. Standard NF EN 1563 specifies that the specimens used for mechanical tests are machined in separately cast sample blocks, and that in exceptional cases, by agreement between the parties, these blocks may be attached to the parts.
