1. Historical perspective and definition of surface plasmons

In this first part of the article, after a brief historical overview, we review the main characteristics of surface plasmons, which we will then detail in the other sections.

1.1 Historical perspective

The first documented observation of surface plasmon waves dates back to 1902, and results from the work of R.W. Wood. He illuminated a metal diffraction grating with white (or polychromatic) light and observed anomalies in the diffraction spectrum, taking the form of narrow dark bands
