5. Interactions between damage and behavior

When damage occurs, the material becomes porous and therefore compressible. Two approaches are generally proposed to account for changes in its mechanical behavior:

  • introduction of a macroscopic damage variable ;

  • the use of specific plasticity criteria.

5.1 Macroscopic damage variable

  • The stress exerted on a surface S subjected to a perpendicular force F is expressed by the relation :
