1. Notching
Once the casting operation has been completed, the metal cools in the mold, changing from a liquid to a solid state. At this point, the part or cluster can be removed from the mold. This operation is commonly referred to as decoring.
The stripping operation consists of :
separate the chassis (if present) from the sand clod and parts;
extract the parts and their appendages from the sand clod or metal mould;
remove sand adhering to the part (molding and core sand);
partially or totally separate the parts of the cluster;
break up sand clods.
For obvious reasons of cycle time reduction and investment cost, it is advisable to decap as soon as possible...
