As Keiji Yokose's team shows , the increase in contact pressure in the case of rolling fatigue leads to a local increase in the temperature of the tribological system (figure 1 ). This can reach 250 to 300°C in the case of an applied stress of 3.5 to 4 GPa with 40% slip in a dual-disc system where the specimens are case-hardened and tempered at 150°C.
