2. Stress-relieving austenitic stainless steels

Residual stresses are the system of elastic stresses existing in a part in the absence of any external stress. They are therefore self-balancing: the existence of a zone in tension implies, for example, the existence of a zone in compression at another point on the part (figure 16 ).
