3. Specifications

Specifications are the key to relations between principals and subcontractors. The specifications they contain summarize the results of the analysis of the problem to be addressed and the definition of the treatment or coating to be applied; they must be drafted with particular care. Although each case is unique, it is possible to set out a few basic rules for avoiding the most commonly encountered defects.

This is the tool that formalizes the designer-applicator relationship. It is often tricky to draw up, as the designer may not have a complete grasp of the problem, particularly if he or she is merely an intermediary.
