5. Profile and laminate manufacturing

Copper from both electrowinning and electrolytic refining comes in the form of high-purity cathodes, while extraction cathodes are sometimes a little less pure, less compact and loaded with a little sulfate from the solutions. As such, they are only suitable for limited applications.

5.1 Merchant products

  • To be processed into wire, sheet and tube, or machined, copper must be cast into compact metal formats suitable for further processing.

    • Wires are cast in wire-bars, which are then rolled into rods, from 8 to 25 mm in diameter, suitable for wire-drawing. This format is increasingly being replaced by the direct production of rods, obtained by continuous rolling of a bar, itself cast without...
