6. Examples of mineral processing

6.1 Aluminium

The Bayer process is universally used on bauxite ores. It takes advantage of the amphoteric properties of alumina. After crushing the ore, the concentrated soda dissolves the alumina according to the reaction:

{Al}_{2} O_{3}, n H_{2} O + 2 NaOH \to {Al}_{2} O_{3}, {Na}_{2} O + n H_{2} O
