barrel; hand collecting

Horizontal gas manifold to which the risers of each furnace are connected via a horsehead.

batterie; battery

A set of coke ovens separated by heating pedestals forming a block operated by a set of machines.

carneaux; heating flues

Vertical masonry flues in a pedestal in which the combustion flame of the heating gas develops with the combustion air.

coking coal; charbon cokéfiant

Coal that goes through a plastic state at between 350 and 500°C when heated away from the air.

couche plastique; plastic layer

The area of a coke oven charge in which the coal is in a plastic state (between approx. 350 and 500°C). As coke oven cells are heated by their...
