carneaux; heating flues

Vertical masonry flues in a pedestal in which the combustion flame develops between the heating gas and the combustion air.

piédroit; heating wall

Heated silica brick wall separating two coke oven cells, consisting of 28 to 32 flues in which gas (coke oven gas or blast furnace gas) is burned.

batterie; battery

A set of coke ovens separated by heating pedestals forming a block operated by a set of machines.

coke quenching; coke quenching

Cooling coke after it has been discharged. In most cases, this is achieved by spraying the coke with water. Dry quenching can also be carried out in a sealed tank in which a cold gas is circulated in counter-current to the coke.
