1.1 Development of new processes

There are three aspects to these developments.

• First of all, their slowness, which can be illustrated:

  • by indicating the approximate times required to develop the main current steelmaking processes (table 1 );

  • by illustrating the case of the only reduction/melting process currently competing industrially with the blast furnace to produce cast iron, i.e. the Corex process (table 2 );
