4. Conclusion

This dossier is intended as a guide to the problems of corrosion of ceramics by gases and liquids. It is not a recipe, but a guide. Engineers faced with problems of this kind need to know not only the ceramic materials involved, but also the environment in which the material interacts.

One of the criteria used to select a ceramic for high-temperature corrosion is its chemical stability under operating conditions. To meet this requirement, the data and lessons drawn from thermodynamics are appropriate, at least in the first approach: by studying the reactions involved, phase changes and equilibrium shifts, it is possible to obtain precise information leading to a better understanding of the potential behavior of ceramics and the processes involved, which can lead to concrete industrial choices.
