2. Why do road surfaces deteriorate?
Road structures are subject to external stresses due to vehicle traffic and climatic aggression. These stresses, coupled with other phenomena such as bitumen ageing, the presence of water or de-icing salts, will lead to the degradation of road surfaces. Phenomena unfavorable to the durability of road surfacings can be classified into three categories, which will be developed in the paragraphs below.
