Scratch testing

Test for qualitative or quantitative characterization of thin films and coatings. This measurement is performed by applying a force, generally increasing, to an indenter, and moving the coated sample under the indenter.

Sclerometry

Measurement of the hardness of solids based on their resistance to scratching.

Adhesion

All the forces between two materials that prevent them from separating.

Critical load

Normal force leading to systematic damage (spalling, cracking, etc.).

Acoustic emission

Energy release in the form of transient elastic waves.
