5.1 Packaging decision tool

The choice of food packaging for a given product is based on a series of economic (e.g. raw material cost), technical (e.g. food preservation) and environmental (e.g. recyclable or biodegradable material) criteria.

These criteria correspond to the constraints and/or desires of industry players. Priorities differ from one stakeholder to another.

For example, manufacturers will give priority to cost as a criterion of choice, while consumers will prefer to focus on the safety aspect, and public authorities on considerations linked to the ease of managing the material's end-of-life.
