5. Glossary

rheology

The science of studying the flow response of fluids to mechanical stress.

fluid newtonien; newtonian fluid

A fluid whose viscosity does not depend on the applied shear rate. More generally, a Newtonian fluid has a linear constitutive law between the stress tensor and the strain rate tensor. This law involves two physical constants: a shear viscosity η (the one discussed in this article) and a volume viscosity linked to the compressibility of the medium.

non-Newtonian fluid; fluide non newtonien

Fluid whose constitutive law deviates from that of a Newtonian fluid (e.g. shear rate-dependent viscosity, time-dependent viscosity, presence of elasticity, etc.).

suspension; suspension

Fluid composed of a mixture...
