4. Applications

The development of these materials is recent, and the manufacturing process is still very costly. As a result, they are currently only used in high value-added sectors such as space and military aeronautics, and are potentially interesting for nuclear applications. Research is being carried out to develop faster, and therefore less costly, production processes than the CVI process (1,000°C, under reduced pressure, for several weeks), so that these materials can be introduced into engines for civil aeronautics.

4.1 Nuclear

Because of their neutron transparency and good behavior under irradiation, SiC/SiC composites could be interesting and potentially highly innovative nuclear fuel cladding materials. They are currently being developed to meet higher performance...
