3. Soil reinforcement mechanisms

Soil improvement or reinforcement is carried out either on the soil in place, or on the added soil, in the case of reinforced backfill. In each case, a distinction is made between the use or non-use of inclusions (figure 9 based on NF P 94210).

Geosynthetic reinforcement involves the inclusion of soil inserts.

In the vast majority of cases, reinforcement geosynthetics are placed horizontally between two layers of backfill.
