2. General characteristics taken into account for all products

These are physical or physico-chemical properties included in the specifications of several types of product, whatever their use.

2.1 Color

This characteristic applies to products that are said to be white, but which are in fact colored to varying degrees, from very pale yellow to dark brown.

There are two methods for estimating the color of petroleum products:

  • the Saybolt technique (in accordance with ASTM D 156 64 and NF M 07-003): to determine the Saybolt color, the height of a column of test sample is gradually decreased until its color is clearly lighter than that of a standard. Saybolt color is expressed by a number related to the column height, ranging from +30 (practically colorless)...
