6.1 Need for recognition of the "mediator/translator" function

The importance of ongoing dialogue between scientists and legislators was emphasized in many interviews. Interaction must take place throughout the development of research activities. An important aspect of this dialogue is the establishment of a climate of mutual trust. Barriers persist, however, limiting "familiar" contacts between scientists and legislators.

The issue of "translating" scientific knowledge for application in the legislative process is widely debated. Many believe that a new breed of "translators" (or "mediators") is needed to bridge the gap between science and legislation.
