5. Uncertainty assessment

In LCA studies, the uncertainties affecting the inventory are often assessed during the qualification stage, using qualitative approaches, intervals or probability functions. In this way, assessment results are treated at the same level as data quality criteria. However, the complexity and stakes involved in assessing uncertainties call for more specific and exhaustive approaches.

In the Life cycle assessment. Uncertainties in impact assessments, it is specified that the assessment of uncertainties involves the evaluation of imprecision, variability and uncertainty in the strict sense. These uncertainties affect the various elements used to arrive at the final inventory results, namely the inventory data and the models (rules).
