4. Application examples

Here we illustrate the various possible uses of scaling models on a simple example of preliminary elevator motor design. As part of a preliminary design, scaling laws can be used to :

  • analyze trends and compare technologies, in particular by quickly setting up templates or summary graphs. In the example of the elevator, the aim will be to estimate the influence of electric motor inertia on torque requirements, and to help choose a reduction ratio;

  • assist in the selection or specification of components, particularly in the absence of a manufacturer's database. Estimation models are used here to estimate parameters characteristic of the limiting performance of components;

  • support integration studies in terms of overall dimensions and masses. In the example considered here, we...
