1. Understand what is meant by confidential information

Contrary to popular belief, confidential information is not necessarily new or secret information, in the sense that only you would know about it. It can be :

• information that is shared by several people, but in a confidential manner, i.e. not accessible to everyone in a public way;

• information that is publicly available, but not easily accessible to all, or that requires extensive research or special expertise;

• or, more simply, information that has value and for which someone would be willing to pay to have access to it, e.g. a database of well-known information, or a market review (benchmarking), etc.
