Researchers in astrophysics and geophysics are increasingly developing and exploiting numerical simulation techniques, with which they are carrying out real thought experiments, backed up by data, in fields where concrete experimentation is not easily accessible –or even possible – for example, in order to unravel certain enigmas of the Universe or to contribute to the analysis of geophysical risks: these are two fields in which numerical simulation is playing a growing role, and which this section illustrates by means of two examples.
