1. Discover Diigo: a social bookmarking tool

The practice of social bookmarking originated in the mid-2000s, and is often associated with the beginnings of the social web. The idea is to store one's favorites, or bookmarks, online and share them with other Internet users. Each user indexes his or her bookmarks via a system of tags that they assign themselves. This is the principle of folksonomy, i.e. spontaneous, collaborative indexing. Bookmarks can correspond to all kinds of web content: web pages, PDF documents, multimedia files...

Diigo – for Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff – has been a pioneer in social bookmarking since its launch in 2005 by an American start-up based in Nevada.
