1. General provisions on ventilation and thermal environments in the workplace

The quality of working atmospheres is governed by the provisions of Articles R. 4211-1 et seq. of the French Labor Code, which distinguish between the obligations of the client in designing workplaces and those of the employer in using them.

The first concern the rules to be complied with by project owners undertaking the construction or fitting-out of buildings intended to accommodate workers, whether or not such operations require a building permit (art. R. 4211-1 of the French Labor Code).

The notion of "workplaces" is defined as "places intended to accommodate workstations, whether or not located in the buildings of the establishment, as well as any other place within the area of the establishment to which the worker has access in the course of his work".
