7. Conclusion

The landfill has undergone a gradual transformation, culminating in a veritable revolution when it became a storage facility. The impermeable confinement that protects against environmental aggression is a major departure from the concepts that prevailed until then. We could even say that the changes undergone in the development of hazardous waste landfills (prior stabilization, limitation in the categories of waste concerned, very thorough containment of the waste stockpile) now make them an accomplished, sustainable sector, as the degree of residual risk should be considered eco-compatible.

For other types of landfill, we need to master sealing and drainage techniques, as well as the new behavior of waste in this confined environment. We need to learn how to model its reactions when subjected to various influencing factors, so as to guide it towards the different...
