The study of the risks and impacts that a landfill can have on the environment and human health is carried out by examining :
hazards: "maximum potential effects that a waste can, in theory, produce";
of risk: "the proportion of the hazard that can actually be expected in a given scenario," multiplied "by the probability of the event occurring" (R = proportion of hazard x probability of occurrence).
The measures and systems adopted to deal with these risks are designed either to reduce the potential hazards, or to reduce the risks by acting on the scale of the feared event or on its probability of occurrence.
