The control structures built in the 1980s helped to disrupt the entire ecological dynamics of the watercourse, in particular fish and sediment continuity (i.e., there must be no obstacle to the upstream/downstream circulation of any animal species in the watercourse, and natural erosion must be allowed to follow its course to the sea without being disrupted by weirs or structures). These structures will also accelerate the eutrophication of the watercourse through the accumulation of nutrient-rich organic sediments.
During the summer months, increased sediment levels and reduced water levels accelerate the heating up of the water body, leading to explosions of algae and cyanobacteria. This phenomenon is poorly perceived by the general public, and is accompanied by episodes of fish mortality.
