3. Risk prevention

The various approaches to preventing accidents involving falls from a height are part of the approach set out in the general principles of prevention (article L. 4121-2 of the French Labour Code).

The first of these, "risk avoidance", has been used in a variety of professional situations with excellent effectiveness, since it removes people from risk.

However, it can only respond to specific situations, and reaches its limit for all activities that nevertheless require elevated work. In such cases, a preventive approach is sought through the use of protection, giving priority to permanent over temporary protection (figure 2 ).
